Behind Trump’s Tough Talk on Russia and Putin, Doubts and Missing Details

Although President Trump has drastically changed his stance on the war, his new promise to deliver weapons to Ukraine and his concurrent threat of severe sanctions on Russia’s economic partners leave important aspects unexplained.

Mr. Trump stated that Patriot air defense systems and other weaponry would be swiftly sent to Ukraine, which is in dire need of additional armaments to repel Russia’s invasion, when speaking with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte at the White House on Monday.

According to Mr. Trump, the United States would sell those weapons to European countries, who would either transfer them to Ukraine or use them to replenish the armaments they now send there.

However, Pentagon officials later stated that a lot of details were still being finalized.

Additionally, experts questioned the legitimacy of Mr. Trump’s warning to slap 100% tariffs on Russia’s trading partners if Russian President Vladimir V. Putin did not consent to a cease-fire within 50 days.

Given the magnitude of China-Russian commerce, which amounts to around $250 billion annually and includes significant oil imports, Mr. Trump would face Beijing if he fulfilled the threat. According to analysts, Mr. Trump is unlikely to risk a new conflict with the second-largest economy in the world over Ukraine, a nation whose future he has long stated is not crucial to the US.

There are concerns about whether Mr. Trump will take action if the 50-day countdown he has set for Mr. Putin expires because he is infamous for establishing deadlines that he does not follow.
