Biden Appointed U.S. Attorney in New Jersey Announces Resigation Prior to Trump Inauguration

NEWARK, N.J. — After three years as the District of New Jersey’s top federal prosecutor, U.S. Attorney Philip R. Sellinger announced his resignation on Tuesday, effective January 8, 2025.

In a statement, Sellinger thanked President Biden for his nomination and reflected on the achievements of the office throughout his tenure, saying, “It has been the honor of a lifetime.”

Targeting violent crime was a top priority for the office under Sellinger’s direction, and as a result, shootings and homicides in New Jersey have steadily decreased in Newark, Camden, Jersey City, and Paterson. Prosecution of those involved in serious foster child abuse and noteworthy actions against street gangs that support the state’s drug trade were among the noteworthy cases.

In order to combat hate crimes, discriminatory practices, and systemic abuses, Sellinger created the first independent Civil Rights Division in any U.S. Attorney’s Office. His agency gained remedies in racial discrimination cases that resulted in $250 million in loans for minority groups and secured convictions for hate crimes, including attacks on Orthodox Jewish and Muslim communities.

His tenure also featured fraud prosecutions, measures against lead pipe poisoning in Newark, and a historic $1.8 billion settlement with TD Bank for anti-money laundering offenses.
