Washington Tom Homan, President Donald Trump’s border czar, has threatened to sue authorities who thwart federal immigration enforcement efforts, sending a strong message to sanctuary state leaders, including New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy.
This law will be enforced. In reference to plans for a massive deportation campaign aimed at criminal illegal aliens, Homan stated, “We’re going to do what the American people want us to do.” Governors like Murphy, he said, must step aside or risk criminal prosecution for obstructing federal operations. It’s a felony if you plan to obstruct our progress. Homan exclaimed, “We’re done playing the game,” and added, “If it comes to it, I’m willing to put you in jail.”
Governor Murphy, a vocal advocate for New Jersey’s sanctuary policy, reacted boldly to Trump’s claims of mass deportations. Murphy emphasized his resolve to protect undocumented people in his state from federal immigration enforcement by saying, “We will fight like hell, and we’ll fight to the death.”
The altercation takes place in the midst of increased hostilities over sanctuary counties, where local officials restrict collaboration with ICE. The Trump administration has frequently denounced these regulations, claiming that they compromise public safety and encourage criminal activity.
As Trump’s immigration policy program, which includes mass deportations, takes shape in the first few weeks of his second term, the conflict between federal officials and state leaders is anticipated to intensify.
