Brick man sentenced to four years for sexual assault of woman in Atlantic City

MAYS LANDING, N.J. — According to Atlantic County officials, a man from Brick Township was given a four-year sentence in state prison on Monday for the sexual assault of a woman he met on a dating app in 2021.

Gary M. Kearns, 56, acknowledged attacking the victim in an Atlantic City hotel in August 2021 without her consent and entered a guilty plea to second-degree sexual assault on August 26. Kearns must complete at least 85% of his sentence before becoming eligible for parole under New Jersey’s No Early Release Act. Following his release, he will be subject to Megan’s Law registration and lifetime parole supervision.

Prosecutors claim that Kearns courted the victim under a false identity after meeting her on Facebook Dating. Claiming to be going on a date, he picked her up and drove her to Atlantic City. The victim was sexually abused by Kearns in the hotel before being left stranded over an hour away from her home.

The Special Victims Units of the Atlantic City Police Department and the Atlantic County Prosecutor’s Office looked into the matter. Tiffany deGrandmaison, an assistant prosecutor, was in charge of the State’s case.

Authorities underlined Kearn’s dishonesty and predatory actions, underscoring the gravity of the offense.
