The story is deeply personal yet universally inspiring. It centers on Nickey, a devoted father whose love for his autistic son, Kieran, sparked a movement with a profound impact across Ocean County. Together with community support, Nickey’s vision has transformed into the celebrated End of Summer BBQ Bash, now in its 10th year.
A Dad’s Love That Sparked a Movement
Nick’s journey began in September 2016 with a simple but powerful idea: to create a space where families and children with autism could come together, share experiences, and celebrate their unique journeys over a warm barbecue.
With support from POAC Autism Services in Brick, the first event unfolded on a chilly September afternoon. Despite the cool weather, the warmth and excitement of the gathering ignited something special that would grow beyond all expectations.
Community Support That Made It Grow
What was initially envisioned as a “one-and-done” event quickly gained momentum as the Ocean County American Legion Family recognized its value and insisted it continue. Their unwavering commitment, along with the help of local organizations such as American Legion posts, Riders, Auxiliary units, and volunteer groups, fueled its growth.

From 150 Families to Over 600 Every Year
Since its inception, the End of Summer BBQ Bash has grown exponentially. Initially serving about 150 families, it now welcomes between 500 to 600 families annually, all coming together to celebrate community and acceptance.
The event is more than just a barbecue – it is a day filled with laughter, connection, and celebration, symbolizing the power of love and determination.
“Nick’s vision, inspired by his love for Kieran, has become a day of acceptance, laughter, and community. It’s proof that when love and determination come together, lives can truly be changed,” said a close family member.
