Brooklyn man convicted in fatal Newburgh double shooting

NEWBURGH, N.Y. — Romaine McRae, 40, of Brooklyn, was convicted on Wednesday of all charges related to a deadly double shooting that occurred in April 2023, Orange County District Attorney David M. Hoovler announced. The conviction, which includes charges of second-degree murder and attempted murder, followed a jury trial in the Orange County Court.

McRae was found guilty of second-degree murder, attempted murder in the second degree, two counts of first-degree assault, and second-degree criminal possession of a weapon. He faces a maximum sentence of 50 years to life in prison when he appears for sentencing on January 6, 2025. After the jury delivered its verdict, McRae was remanded to the Orange County Jail without bail.

Prosecutors presented evidence showing that McRae, along with co-defendant Dwayne Hines, carried out a double shooting on Lander Street in the City of Newburgh around 8:30 a.m. on April 24, 2023. The incident resulted in one man’s death and left another paralyzed. The attack was described as a calculated and violent execution, carried out in broad daylight.

McRae and Hines were apprehended in Brooklyn on July 12, 2023, after an investigation led by the City of Newburgh Police Department’s Detective Bureau, in cooperation with the Orange County District Attorney’s Office, New York State Police, several NYPD precincts, and the Hudson Valley Crime Analysis Center. Hines previously pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and attempted murder charges and is awaiting sentencing.

“This hard-won conviction brings to a close a case of inconceivable brutality that shattered the lives of the victims and the peace of our community,” Hoovler said in a statement. He praised the City of Newburgh Police Department for their persistent and detailed investigation, which was crucial in bringing McRae and Hines to justice.

Hoovler reaffirmed his office’s commitment to pursuing violent criminals and protecting the citizens of Orange County. The investigation into the case, he said, reflected a coordinated and tireless effort by law enforcement agencies across multiple jurisdictions.
