NC’s Buncombe County. The Buncombe County Sheriff’s Office Crime Scene Unit mobilized community support following Hurricane Helene to aid in the recovery of students and families.

The unit received urgent calls for assistance within minutes of contacting counselors, social workers, and principals throughout Buncombe County Schools. As the needs were apparent, other schools and organizations joined the program, which started with eight schools.

Law enforcement agencies from neighboring states, local communities, and faith-based organizations also poured in donations. The Spartanburg Police Department, Pisgah Forest Baptist Church, and innumerable others motivated by a Discover Asheville social media post were among the contributors.

In addition to groups like Black Mountain Home for Children and Foster Family Alliance, the joint effort supplied necessary supplies to students at 13 schools. More than 90 pairs of socks, 230 backpacks, 200 hats, 140 pairs of gloves, 250 winter coats, and hundreds of school supplies, books, and art tools were among the donations.

According to a statement from the Sheriff’s Office, “this incredible collaboration between the community and our team made sure that students had what they needed to go back to school and regain a sense of normalcy.”
