Albany, New YorkA 26-year-old Cairo, New York resident named Drew Caswell was found guilty of distributing, receiving, and possessing child pornography and was given a 9-year sentence in federal prison. United States Attorney Carla B. Freedman, New York State Police Superintendent Steven G. James, and Craig L. Tremaroli, Special Agent in Charge of the FBI’s Albany Field Office, announced the punishment.
It was during a guilty plea that Caswell admitted to utilizing a file-hosting service to download child pornography, which he then shared on social media, that led to his conviction. Nearly 300 photos and films showing the sexual assault of infants and toddlers were discovered on his cell phone on August 7, 2023, and were among the materials used in the case.
The sentence was handed down by United States District Judge Anne M. Nardacci and includes a 20-year period of supervised release after his incarceration. Caswell will have to register as a sex offender upon his release.
Troop F of the New York State Police and its Computer Crimes Unit were among the law enforcement agencies that worked together to undertake the FBI’s Child Exploitation Task Force investigation that resulted in Caswell’s arrest. Assistant U.S. Attorney Mikayla Espinosa prosecuted the case as part of the Department of Justice’s countrywide Project Safe Childhood campaign, which was started in May 2006.
The goal of Project Safe Childhood is to increase the efficiency of national, state, and local initiatives to prevent child abuse and exploitation online. Its main goals are victim rescue and the identification and capture of criminals. You can learn more about this program atjustice.gov/psc.
