CAF SAN DIEGOAfter a distressing event at San Diego State University in California when a pledge was allegedly set on fire during a party, our members of the Phi Kappa Psi fraternity are being charged with crimes. The victim and the fraternity members involved have suffered severe repercussions as a result of the February 17, 2024 incident.
The Incident: A Dangerous Skit at a Fraternity Party
The party was held in contravention of the fraternity’s probation from the institution, according to the San Diego County District Attorney’s office.
Members and pledges of Phi Kappa Psi are accused of staging a risky skit during the event in which Christopher Serrano lit Lars Larsen on fire. The 19-year-old Larsen needed weeks in the hospital to recuperate after suffering third-degree burns on 16% of his body, mostly on his legs.
Additionally, the defendants and other underage kids at the party drank alcohol prior to the skit, according to the district attorney’s office. This increased the event’s level of irresponsibility even more.
Efforts to Obstruct the Investigation
A number of fraternity members allegedly tried to obstruct the investigation after the startling incident.
Christopher Serrano, Lars Larsen (the victim), Caden Cooper (the fraternity president), and Lucas Cowling (a pledge board member) are charged with lying to police and erasing evidence from social media.
In addition, the group allegedly told other fraternity members to keep quiet about the incident and to remove any incriminating materials.
Criminal Charges and Consequences
Criminal charges have now been brought against the four parties, the most serious of which are connected to Larsen’s assault. All four were freed with the proviso that they must abide by the law and refrain from attending any fraternity events in the future, including parties or recruitment drives.
The charges are intended to make the defendants responsible for the excessive actions that caused the victim’s damage and the following attempt to hide the truth, the District Attorney’s office said in a release.
The investigation is still ongoing, and as authorities work to bring the victim justice, new information might become available.
