CA officials report that the mother administered prescription medication to the toddler and waited in the car with her while she passed away.
A woman charged with the intentional administration of prescription medications to her 2-year-old daughter has been sentenced, according to California authorities.
In a Facebook post on September 6, the Shasta County District Attorney’s Office announced that Macie Silvey received a sentence of 33 years to life in prison for the killing of her daughter in 2023.
There was no immediate response from an attorney representing Silvey to McClatchy News’ request for comment on September 9th.
The Record Searchlight reported that during Silvey’s sentence hearing, her father, Todd Silvey, expressed his grief at the loss of both his granddaughter and daughter.
“The person that murdered our granddaughter is the not the same person who grew up with us,” he said, the newspaper reported. “It pains me. There’s no win when she goes to prison. We’ll have nothing.”
During the inquiry, Redding police officers discovered that the 21-year-old mother intentionally supplied and permitted her child to obtain prescription drugs in January 2023, as stated in an August 2023 Facebook post detailing Silvey’s arrest.
Although Silvey was aware that her daughter had taken the drugs and displayed symptoms similar to an overdose, she is said to have deliberately driven to rural Shasta County, therefore impeding her from getting medical care for her daughter for several hours, according to the police.
According to authorities, the duo were seated together in the car parked in Millville when the toddler passed away.
“After her child died, Silvey drove into town and pretended that an accident had happened,” prosecutors said.
After a seven-month investigation, detectives procured a warrant for Silvey’s arrest in connection with the girl’s death.
Law enforcement officials reported that she was apprehended on August 8, 2023, on charges of homicide and abduction.
At her arraignment in the same month, she entered a plea of not guilty, according to the prosecutors.
Nine months later, Silvey admitted confessed to the charges of first-degree murder and kidnapping, as stated by prosecutors in a Facebook post.
During Silvey’s sentencing trial, John Harrison, the girl’s paternal grandfather, vividly recounted his cherished recollections of his granddaughter. He described instances when he would rouse her from naps and offer her cuddles, or occasionally instruct her in the art of hooting like an owl, as reported by the Record Searchlight.
“She was a beautiful child,” Harrison stated, as cited by the newspaper.
