City Employee Arrested for DWI After Accident Involving City Garbage Truck




Schenectady, New York – *At at 8:06 a.m. on Tuesday, the Schenectady Police Department arrived at the scene of an accident in the 600 block of Orchard Street. When a garbage truck from the City of Schenectady backed into a worker who was loading trash, he was momentarily trapped between the truck and a pole.

After being taken to Albany Medical Center, the injured worker had surgery to treat his wounds. Officers looked into the event after it happened.

It was discovered that the truck’s driver, 51-year-old Schenectady resident Robert L. Thomas, was operating the vehicle while intoxicated. In addition to a general violation, he has been charged with driving while drunk with a blood alcohol percentage over 0.08 and backing up unsafely.

Thomas no longer works for the city after being released on appearance tickets. The victim is still recovering at the hospital, and his name has not been made public.
