Jackson, New Jersey. A Jackson family is struggling with the tragic death of Jim Morell, their teenage son, who was murdered over the weekend after being hit by a car.
The community is in grief and coming together to support the bereaved family as a result of the unexpected catastrophe.
Known for his positive outlook and interpersonal skills, Morell was a loving son, brother, and friend. Salvatore Scalici, a family friend, posted a statement on a fundraising page set up to help the family, saying, “Jim moved to his own beat and welcomed everyone into his world.”
The family’s grief as the holiday season approaches is exacerbated by the teen’s death, which occurs only weeks before his birthday.
Jackson locals have raised $30,000 to support the family thus far.

In recent years, the Morell family has had many challenges, such as Jim’s father contracting a potentially fatal virus during the COVID-19 epidemic and his mother, Bettina, battling cancer. Through the GoFundMe effort, which has already garnered a tonne of community support, friends of the family are seeking to alleviate their financial burden by collecting money to pay for funeral costs.
Scalici highlighted Jim’s influence on everyone around him and called him a ray of light in his son’s life. He added, recalling treasured recollections of the boys’ connection, “My son, who was quite introverted back then, formed a strong friendship with Jim, and it truly helped him come out of his shell.”
The campaign showcases the strong ties and generosity of the Jackson community, which has united to help a family that has long been a part of its fabric, as the family gets ready to bury Jim.
Following a tragedy, a community comes together to remember a cherished teenager.
