Connecticut mother charged after leaving four children in squalid apartment for hours

VERNON, CONN. After discovering her four children living in a Vernon apartment that was described by the police as being full of trash, animal and human waste, and rotting food, a 40-year-old mother was taken into custody.

Lindsey Powell allegedly left her children, who are aged 11, 6, 4, and 3, alone for at least eight hours as she traveled to upstate New York, according to an arrest report filed on November 8. A welfare check was requested at the flat, and authorities were notified of the issue.

Gregory Webster, a Vernon police officer, reported entering and being overcome by a strong stink. He also described the situation being so dirty that it was hard to stand. The report included bodily fluids, fly swarms, rotting food, and trash heaps strewn all around the house.

According to Webster, the apartment’s living conditions were appalling, with cat and human waste on the floors and a living room so disorganized that it was practically impossible to go around without treading on liquids or debris.

Powell allegedly admitted to officials that she left her kids behind because she was depressed and stressed. After being taken from the flat, the kids were turned over to child protective services.

Powell is charged with several offenses, including posing a danger of harm to a youngster. Her case is still pending, and no additional information regarding possible legal procedures has been made public.
