COON RAPIDS, Minn. – The Walmart store located at 13020 Riverdale Dr. NW in Coon Rapids is set to permanently close on August 29, 2025, according to a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) letter shared by Minnesota state officials.
The closure will directly impact 176 employees, who are expected to be laid off starting October 31, 2025.
What Happened
The announcement came from the Minnesota State Rapid Response Team, a division under the Department of Employment and Economic Development. It confirmed the Coon Rapids Walmart will shut its doors to customers by the end of August.
Though no official reason for the closure was provided, affected employees will receive a 90-day paid job search period, giving them the opportunity to apply for roles at other Walmart locations, Sam’s Club, or company facilities.
Previous Closures
This isn’t the first Walmart to close in the Twin Cities metro area. In April 2023, another store in Brooklyn Center was closed, affecting approximately 350 employees. In that instance, Walmart cited financial performance as the key reason.
However, for the Coon Rapids location, no such explanation was included in the WARN notice.
