MARGATE, NJ.The famous six-story roadside attraction Lucy the Elephant in Margate is undergoing a significant accessibility makeover. In order to create a brand-new, cutting-edge interpretive center that will make the site fully ADA accessible for the first time, workers started tearing down the 50-year-old gift shop on Wednesday.
The Lucy team declared, “We have dreamed for more than 20 years of making Lucy fully ADA accessible so everyone can experience her magic, barrier-free.”
The new center, which is expected to be finished by the middle of 2026, will have exhibit space and accessible walkways so that people of all physical abilities may appreciate the ancient building.
Temporary store operational while work is underway
Lucy the Elephant will continue to be accessible for tours during the construction phase. Across the street from the location, at the intersection of Washington and Atlantic Avenues, is a makeshift gift shop.
This long-awaited renovation is a significant step in honoring Lucy’s legacy and welcoming all guests.
With the opening of a new visitor center and the dismantling of her long-standing souvenir shop, Lucy the Elephant is getting closer to complete accessibility.
