Deputies Fatally Shoot Armed Fugitive After Hours-Long SWAT Standoff in Marrero

Marrero, LA – A deadly deputy-involved shooting occurred on Tuesday, September 17, following a SWAT standoff in Marrero. According to the Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office (JPSO), 55-year-old Steven Fifer of Marrero was shot and killed after raising a firearm toward deputies.

The incident took place in the 5500 block of Hamerick Drive, near Ehret Road and Ames Boulevard. JPSO Sheriff Joseph Lopinto confirmed that Fifer was wanted out of New Orleans on multiple charges, including aggravated second-degree battery, battery of a dating partner, and home invasion. When law enforcement arrived, Fifer barricaded himself inside his home.

The JPSO SWAT team was activated just before 7 a.m., with authorities negotiating for several hours. Fifer, reportedly armed with two weapons, refused to leave the residence and made threats against his own life. Sheriff Lopinto said the situation escalated when Fifer emerged from the house, raising his firearm, which prompted at least two deputies to open fire, fatally wounding him.

One neighbor, who wished to remain unnamed, reported hearing officers over a loudspeaker telling Fifer to “put the weapon down.” Shortly after, the neighbor recalled hearing 6-8 gunshots and taking cover until an all-clear signal was given.

The investigation into the incident is ongoing. Sheriff Lopinto praised the cooperation of the SWAT team during the standoff, stating, “We take every precaution when dealing with armed individuals, but our priority is always the safety of the community and officers involved.”
