The manager of a Nevada plumbing company was fined and given a federal prison sentence for unlawfully dumping garbage into nearby sewer systems. Environmental Resources Inc. (ERP) managing manager Matthew Thurman, who operates as Easy Rooter Plumbing (ERP), will be sentenced to two years in prison and one year of supervised release. In addition to his jail term, Thurman must pay a fine of $680,000. ERP is currently on three years of probation and has also been compelled to pay a $680,000 fine.

Illegal Dumping and Federal Investigation

Thurman and his company engaged in a plot to illegally pump wastewater and grease waste from food-service establishments into Reno and Sparks’ wastewater treatment systems. Despite local regulators’ warnings, the illegal discharges occurred over a number of years. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) spearheaded a federal inquiry as a result of these infractions.

U.S. Attorney Jason M. Frierson responded to the accusations by saying, “Our clean water system is essential to Nevadans’ daily lives.” The defendants violated the Clean Water Act and endangered the quality of life of our citizens by willfully and unlawfully disposing of waste into the treatment system.

Authorities will continue to hold violators accountable for such actions, he added.

Thurman s False Statements During Investigation

Thurman tried to deceive federal agents during the course of the investigation. The investigation was made more difficult by his bogus accusation that competitors were to blame for the unlawful discharges.

Thurman’s actions were denounced by EPA Assistant Administrator David M. Uhlmann, who said, “The defendant engaged in conduct that required taxpayer dollars to be spent on costly repairs, defrauded clients, and exposed Nevada communities to contaminated sewage.”

“Today’s significant sentencing demonstrates that EPA will continue to bring environmental criminals to justice,” Uhlmann added.
