Driver arrested in fatal Perth Amboy hit-and-run




Amboy, N.J. Officials said on Saturday that a 23-year-old Perth Amboy resident has been charged in relation to a hit-and-run that killed a pedestrian on Friday night.

At around 6:20 p.m. on December 6, police were called to complaints of a pedestrian being struck on Elm Street between Market Street and Riverview Drive. Gladis Ruiz, 57, of Elizabeth, New Jersey, was found seriously injured by authorities upon arrival. According to investigators, Ruiz passed away from her wounds after being taken to a nearby hospital.

Investigators discovered that Ruiz was hit by a 2010 Hyundai Sonata as she was crossing Elm Street on her way home from work. The vehicle quickly left the site of the collision.

Jarleidys A. Bautista, the driver of the car, was taken into custody without incident on December 7. Charges against Bautista include third-degree endangering an injured person and second-degree fleeing the scene of an accident. While she awaits a pre-trial detention hearing, she is being detained at the Middlesex County Adult Correctional Center.

Detectives James Alleva of the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office and Kyle Savoia of the Perth Amboy Police Department are leading the investigation, which is still ongoing as investigators try to learn more about the incident.
