Driver cited in pedestrian death of High Bridge crossing guard

New Jersey’s High Bridge. Following a collision that killed 79-year-old crossing guard Robert Bork at the intersection of CR 513 and Larrison Avenue on November 27, 2024, authorities reported Wednesday that a Glen Gardner man has been issued motor vehicle summonses.

The High Bridge Police Department issued a citation to Steven Leyden, 57, for reckless driving and failing to yield to a pedestrian. As per the Hunterdon County Prosecutor’s Office, Leyden stayed at the location following the event.

On CR 513, Bork was hit by Leyden’s southbound car while he was in the crosswalk area carrying out his crossing guard responsibilities. After being transported by air to Morristown Medical Center, he passed away from his wounds.

The Hunterdon County Prosecutor’s Office Forensic Analysis Collision Team assisted in the investigation when emergency responders, including the High Bridge Police Department, Fire Department, Annandale Fire Department, and South Branch Emergency Services, arrived on the scene.

Prosecutor Ren e M. Robeson expressed sympathy to Bork’s family and the High Bridge community, verified the charges, and commended first responders for their efforts.
