SAN DIEGO COUNTY—Last week, two males were taken into custody in the Californian Pine Valley after trying to elude a Border Patrol checkpoint on Interstate 8. Suspected of narcotics smuggling, the two were caught after a short chase and collision.

Fleeing the Scene and the Crash

At an immigration checkpoint on I-8 near Pine Valley, Border Patrol officers tried to refer a car for secondary examination at approximately 4 p.m. on Thursday. Agents pursued the motorist for a short while after he escaped west on I-8. When the suspect driver lost control of the car and it crashed close to East Willows Road, the pursuit came to an end.

Agents swiftly apprehended the driver and his passenger after they escaped on foot. Both males were treated at a nearby hospital after suffering minor injuries in the collision.

Fentanyl Discovered in the Vehicle

Another illustration of how risky it is to elude law enforcement. According to a statement from San Diego Sector Chief Patrol Agent Patricia McGurk-Daniel, these alleged drug smugglers not only jeopardized their own safety but also the safety of other drivers on the road.

Agents found eight bundles wrapped in plastic when they searched the car. The parcels included 4.73 pounds of tablets that tested positive for fentanyl. The case was sent to the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) for additional investigation and criminal prosecution when the fentanyl pills were confiscated.

Agent McGurk-Daniel continued, “Our agents put in a lot of effort to protect the public and keep dangerous drugs off the streets.”
