Edgewater, Maryland. In a fraud case being investigated by Anne Arundel County authorities, a caller posing as a police officer persuaded a victim to submit money by claiming that the victim was absent from jury duty.
The fraud started Tuesday afternoon when the victim got a call from someone posing as the Anne Arundel County Police Department, according to the Southern District Police. The caller threatened to put the victim in jail unless she paid a fine since she had not shown up for jury duty.
The caller moved the victim to someone else who seemed to be another department employee when the victim became suspicious. This person told the victim that she could talk to a judge the next day to settle the issue, but in the meantime, she was to send money through her bank.
Before understanding she had been duped, the victim complied and sent the scammers an undisclosed sum of money. Anyone with information regarding the crime or similar schemes is being asked to call the Southern District Detective Unit at 410-222-1965, according to the police.
Authorities advise citizens that no law enforcement agency, government agency, or judicial system will ask for money over the phone, especially when it comes to gift cards, wire transfers, or electronic payments.
According to a police statement, if you receive such a call, hang up right away. To confirm the accusation, speak with a trusted individual or your local law enforcement.
