PAYETTE After he reportedly tried to plant a bomb on a parked train car, an IDA man from Payette, Idaho, found himself in hot trouble. Following the startling incident on Wednesday, a chain of events drew together federal investigators, bomb squads, and local police.
Arrest and Discovery of the IED
The Payette Police Department responded to complaints of a suspicious individual near a parked train car on North 8th Street at approximately 6 p.m. on Wednesday.
When the officers got there, they discovered new footprints in the snow that led them to the train car. An improvised explosive device (IED) that had not yet exploded was found there.
Brent Sharrai, 40, was promptly identified as the culprit. Tracks left in the snow led authorities to a camp trailer close to a house on the same street. Sharrai escaped on foot when police tried to arrest him. He turned himself in to the police after a short chase.
Bomb Squad and Investigation
Trains that were supposed to travel through the region were put on hold for around five hours after Union Pacific, the rail operator, was alerted right away.
In order to handle the item securely, the Nampa Bomb Squad was called in. The IED was removed by a robot, and it was made safe by a controlled detonation.
In an effort to learn more about the device and Sharrai’s motivations, FBI officers also arrived to support the inquiry.
Search and Additional Charges
Officers carried out a search warrant at Sharrai’s camp trailer following his arrest. In addition to prohibited narcotics and drug paraphernalia, they discovered other items that resembled the IED that was discovered on the train car.
Sharrai was booked into the Payette County Jail on many counts, including resisting officers, possessing a destructive device, possessing a controlled substance, and possessing drug paraphernalia, in addition to facing unspecified charges pertaining to outstanding warrants. Federal charges pertaining to the manufacture and possession of a dangerous device could be brought in the future, and the FBI is still looking into the matter.
