PINE COUNTY, MN A 31-year-old man is accused of carrying out an execution-style shooting of his father at a hunting cabin in Pine County, Minnesota, turning a family meal into a murderous event. According to the authorities, Kirk Edward Hazlett III, the accused, also detained two witnesses during the incident before letting them go after seizing their phones.
Suspect Faces Multiple Charges for Cabin Tragedy
One case of first-degree burglary, two counts of second-degree homicide, and two counts of second-degree kidnapping were brought against Hazlett III, of Cambridge, by Pine County prosecutors on Monday. The family’s hunting cabin on the 57000 block of Barns Spring Road in Hinckley was shot at on Friday night, which is the basis for the allegations.
The criminal complaint states that at approximately 8:45 p.m., Hazlett III’s uncle called the police to report that Hazlett III had shot and killed his father. Deputies found the victim laying in a pool of blood after being led to the cabin by the uncle and another witness, who were described as panicked, when they arrived. The man was shot nine times, according to investigators.
Witnesses Recount Terrifying Details
A frightening scene inside the cabin is described in the lawsuit. Investigators were informed by Hazlett III’s uncle and the second witness that they were wrapping up supper with the victim when a trail camera alert revealed a person carrying a weapon approaching the driveway. Before the uncle could get his own firearm out, Hazlett III allegedly came in through the side door and started shooting.
After being shot several times, the uncle informed the authorities that Hazlett III’s father was still alive. Hazlett III then ordered them to sit on the couch as they begged for their lives, according to the witnesses. The complaint claims that Hazlett III approached his father and shot him once more in the back of the head to ensure his death.
Hazlett III allegedly took the men’s cell phones and then let them go. The witnesses called for assistance as they hurried to a nearby cottage.
Hazlett III burst in the door without saying anything and started shooting, according to a witness who later told detectives about the incident. According to the witness, who described the last shot as execution style, he entered with the intention of killing him.
Tensions and Arrest Follow Grisly Scene
Hazlett III had tense ties with his family, according to the lawsuit, but he seemed perfectly sane at the time of the occurrence. Hazlett III reported his girlfriend’s claimed suicidal remarks to Isanti County officials 30 minutes after the incident. Without any more opposition, authorities took him into custody at his Cambridge home.
Investigators were informed by Hazlett III’s fiancée that he had used her car to go to the cabin that evening. She acknowledged that Hazlett III and his family don’t agree, but she didn’t elaborate on a potential explanation.
Hazlett III is still being held on several charges while the incident is being investigated. This terrible incident has left a family in shock and prompted inquiries about what transpired to produce such a dramatic result.
