Anthony Calandra, the owner of Calandra’s Bakery and Italian Market in Essex County, recently made headlines after canceling a GOP get-out-the-vote event at his venue. Calandra had initially agreed to host the event but withdrew permission upon seeing promotional materials that included Trump flags and banners.
Citing an internal company policy, Calandra expressed that he did not want a political rally on his premises, clarifying that the event was originally presented as a local candidate meet-and-greet, not a rally.
Calandra’s is known for their famous Newark bakery and crispy fresh bread.
Calandra explained his decision, emphasizing that while his business is open to hosting paid dinners, it does not allow political rallies. He dismissed the backlash, stating that there were no contracts binding his business to host the event and attributing the situation to a misunderstanding. Calandra remarked that the uproar was overblown and expressed confidence in his decision.
Assemblyman Al Barlas, the Essex County GOP Chairman, described the event’s relocation to another restaurant as a success, highlighting the energy and enthusiasm of the attendees.
The meeting saw notable figures, including Curtis Bashaw, a Republican U.S. Senate candidate, despite the last-minute venue change.

Interestingly, Calandra has made financial contributions to political candidates from both parties, donating to Curtis Bashaw’s campaign through a super PAC and supporting Democratic U.S. Senate candidate Tammy Murphy, along with other Democratic and Republican candidates in the state. His diverse contributions reflect a nuanced political engagement amid the controversy.
