Far Rockaway man indicted for drunken crash into school bus with children in car

Queens, New York. Queens District Attorney Melinda Katz revealed Thursday that a Far Rockaway man has been charged with 21 offenses, including aggravated vehicular assault and endangering the welfare of a child, for allegedly driving while intoxicated and high while carrying his three children before colliding with a school bus.

On the morning of November 18, 2024, Junior Deslances, 42, is charged with speeding, running a double yellow, and causing the head-on collision on Brookville Boulevard. His three children, ages five, eleven, and fifteen, were hurt in the backseat of the car, two of them critically.

According to District Attorney Katz’s statement, the defendant put the lives of his own children and other drivers at danger when he made the reckless and self-centered decision to drive after using marijuana and alcohol.

Deslances was accused of driving while intoxicated with a blood alcohol percentage of.17 percent, which is more than twice the legal limit, according to court documents. Additionally, he tested positive for marijuana’s main component, THC. According to reports, the two older kids unbuckled their own seatbelts to fasten their unrestrained younger brother just before the collision.

The 11-year-old suffered spinal cord fractures and a deep cut to his face in the collision, while the oldest child sustained multiple facial fractures. The youngest youngster was lacerated on the skull. The school bus driver received treatment for nausea and headaches.

An open bottle of beer and marijuana smokes were found during a check of the 2008 Acura SUV. Deslances was operating a vehicle with a suspended license at the time of the collision, according to the authorities.
