New Jersey’s Cape May Court House. Authorities said Tuesday that a local elementary school teacher has been indicted by a Cape May County Grand Jury on many counts pertaining to an alleged sexual contact with a kid.
The accusations against Laura Caron, 34, of Cape May Court House, were sexual assault (second degree), aggravated sexual assault (first degree), and endangering the welfare of a child (second degree). The indictment comes after a thorough collaborative investigation by the Major Crimes Unit of the Middle Township Police Department and the Cape May County Prosecutor’s Office.
According to investigators, Caron had an inappropriate sexual contact with a student living in her home between 2016 and 2020. She worked at Middle Township Elementary School during that time as a fifth-grade teacher.
Prosecutor: Defendant held position of trust
According to Cape May County Prosecutor Jeffrey H. Sutherland, these accusations are extremely upsetting, especially considering the defendant’s position of trust with the victim. Our office is still dedicated to safeguarding our community’s most vulnerable citizens, and we will keep up our vigorous investigation and prosecution of anyone who betray that confidence.
The first-degree charge has a maximum term of 10 to 20 years in New Jersey State Prison, while the second-degree charges have a maximum sentence of 5 to 10 years.
Authorities are requesting that anyone with more information get in touch with the Cape May County Prosecutor’s Office Special Victims Unit at 609-465-1135 or provide anonymous tips online as the investigation is still ongoing.
