First Snowfall of the Season Likely in Kentucky Mountains by Friday Morning

Jackson, KY The first measurable snowfall of the season is expected to hit eastern Kentucky Thursday night into Friday morning. Rain transitioning into snow may create slick travel conditions on untreated roads, especially in the mountains above 2,000 feet.

According to the National Weather Service in Jackson, the best chance for snow accumulation is east of I-75, where higher elevations could see light snowfall. Residents are advised to prepare for minor delays and slippery surfaces during the Friday morning commute. Snow is expected to mix with rain by mid-morning Friday, reducing accumulation on lower elevations or grassy areas.

The extended forecast for Jackson predicts patchy fog Tuesday, with highs near 66. Cooler weather arrives Wednesday night with lows near 37. By Thursday, rain and snow showers are expected to develop in the afternoon, transitioning to steadier snow after 8 p.m. Wind gusts up to 25 mph may further impact visibility.

Friday s high of 43 degrees will likely melt most of the snow by midday, but untreated roads in shaded or higher areas may remain icy. The forecast for the weekend includes partly cloudy skies on Saturday, with a high of 48 degrees, offering a break from precipitation.

Drivers traveling along I-75 and surrounding mountain roads are urged to monitor weather updates, ensure vehicle readiness, and reduce speed during snowfall. For those in higher elevations, plan for reduced visibility and potential travel delays.
