A former tax assessor and collector in north Mississippi has recently sought help for a gambling addiction. After reaching out to the state auditor’s office and admitting to misusing over $300,000 in public funds, he has voluntarily checked into a residential treatment center, according to his attorney.
Shannon Wilburn, 49, voluntarily stepped down from his elected position in Benton County earlier this year. In late July, he embarked on a 12-week addiction treatment program, according to his attorney Tony Farese.
Wilburn has been charged with one count of embezzlement, according to Mississippi Auditor Shad White’s announcement on Tuesday. The announcement was made a few days following Wilburn’s indictment. Farese stated that Wilburn voluntarily surrendered to the sheriff’s office on Friday, subsequently posting bail and resuming the treatment program.
According to Farese, Wilburn stands accused of misappropriating $327,055 that was intended for the Benton County Tax Collector’s office, instead using it for personal expenses. The individual stated that Wilburn admitted to the auditor’s office prior to seeking legal counsel and has been actively assisting investigators.
If found guilty, Wilburn could potentially be subject to fines of up to $5,000 and a maximum prison sentence of 20 years.
According to White, Wilburn’s position as a Benton County elected official was safeguarded by $200,000 in surety bonds, ensuring that taxpayers would be protected from any potential losses due to corruption. Additionally, the county has an insurance policy in place to protect against theft.
