Friday morning NJ Transit delays blamed on late Amtrak train

NEWARK, N.J. — On Friday morning, NJ Transit reported rail congestion caused by a late Amtrak train arriving at Penn Station New York, causing delays of up to 20 minutes for passengers.

NJ TRANSIT rail service is experiencing up to 20-minute delays in and out of Penn Station New York due to congestion caused by a late Amtrak train, the company claimed in a message posted on X, formerly Twitter.

Trains were backed up as they neared the shared tracks leading into one of the biggest transit hubs in the area, causing the disruption to impact many lines during the morning rush. The majority of the facilities in and around Penn Station, which is utilized by both Amtrak and NJ Transit trains, are owned and run by Amtrak.

In recent weeks, Penn Station commuters have frequently encountered delays, especially during rush hours, which are frequently brought on by track sharing and infrastructure limitations.

The shared rail lines and track limitations at Penn Station often result in congestion that can quickly spread to other Amtrak and NJ Transit schedules. Another illustration of how a single delayed train may impact service for thousands of passengers around the region is the delay on Friday.
