The video game enthusiast has entered a guilty plea. He shot his parents in Polk County, Florida, after his father advised him to find employment.
The 24-year-old Joseph David Voigt acknowledged shooting and killing his father, Marvin Voigt, 63, and wounding his mother, 58. According to court documents, Joseph Voigt entered a guilty plea on Monday to first-degree murder and attempted murder in the second degree.
According to the records, the defendant faces a sentence of 26 years to life in jail. There is no established date for sentencing.
Deputies stated in a press release that on December 7, their Bartow police colleagues showed up at the Voigt residence.
The deceased person appeared to have been shot and died in the driveway. Injured as well, his wife was found inside the house. She reported to the police that their son had shot them and run away. She made it through the shooting.
Bartow police requested assistance from their sheriff’s office colleagues after the subject allegedly fled the scene. Polk County and the surrounding area were placed under a “be on the lookout” alert by authorities.
Law authorities eventually located suspect Voigt’s vehicle on International Drive in Orlando.
After a traffic stop, local police arrested him. He was extradited to Polk County after being booked into the Orange County Jail.
“PCSO deputies spoke to Voigt and he admitted to shooting both his father and mother,” deputies stated. “He said his father was upset with him about spending the majority of his time playing video games and ‘riding his a—’ about making something of himself and getting a job. Joseph Voigt’s criminal history includes arrests for firing a weapon in a residential area, and battery.”
“We are deeply saddened by this tragic and senseless shooting,” Bartow police Chief Stephen Walker said at the time. “We sincerely appreciate the assistance provided by the Polk County Sheriff’s Office and the Orlando Police Department in this case, which led to the quick arrest of the suspect, Joseph Voigt.”
