Georgia-Alabama-Tennessee Regional Earthquake: 2.6 Magnitude Quake Strikes Near Menlo on Tuesday

Menlo, GeorgiaA On Tuesday, a 2.6-magnitude earthquake near Menlo, Georgia, rocked portions of the border region between Georgia, Alabama, and Tennessee. The earthquake was detected by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) at a depth of 9.8 kilometers (6.1 miles) and 8 kilometers (5 miles) north of Menlo.

The USGS estimates that the earthquake happened about 8:00 a.m. EST. There have been no documented incidents of injuries or damage. Usually, little earthquakes of this size are too feeble to seriously harm structures.

The tremor was felt in Chattooga County, which is occasionally seismically active and is close to the northwest Georgia border. Although there aren’t many earthquakes in Georgia, there have been a few minor ones recorded there in the past.

In order to enhance seismic data gathering, those who experienced the earthquake are urged to report their experiences to the USGS.

Although no new activity is anticipated, seismologists are nevertheless keeping an eye on the region. Officials advise citizens to keep up to date on earthquake preparedness, particularly in areas that experience sporadic seismic activity.
