Gloucester Township Police honor K-9 Schultz on anniversary of tragic death

New Jersey’s Gloucester Township. K-9 Schultz was murdered on November 30, 2010, while helping to apprehend robbery suspects. The Gloucester Township Police Department is honoring his sacrifice.

K-9 After two suspects attacked a worker during a robbery at the Lucky Dragon Chinese Restaurant on Church Street in Gloucester Township’s Blackwood neighborhood, Schultz was called in. Following a police search after the suspects fled the scene on foot, Schultz was able to follow one of them close to the Route 42 freeway and Blackwood Clementon Road off-ramp.

Schultz tried to grab the suspect’s arm during the pursuit in an attempt to capture him. On Route 42, the man threw the 85-pound dog into oncoming traffic, where Schultz was instantly killed when he was hit by a car. The suspect escaped into a wooded area after being grazed by the same vehicle.

The Highland Regional High School parking lot was used as the command post during the ensuing manhunt. Two hours later, police in a nearby area apprehended the culprit in Schultz’s death. The next day, the second suspect was captured.

The police said, “We honor K-9 Schultz on this day for his service, courage, and ultimate sacrifice in defending our community.”
