Hagerstown woman wins $870K on grocery trip

HAGERSTOWN, MD

– A Washington County school employee quietly held onto a jackpot-winning Multi-Match ticket for nearly two months before stepping forward to claim her $870,000 prize, Maryland Lottery officials announced Tuesday.

The woman, a resident of Hagerstown, purchased the winning ticket on April 10 at Martins supermarket located at 1670 Wesel Road. The ticket matched all six numbers drawn, making her the sole jackpot winner. She chose the cash option and walked away with $510,000 before taxes.

According to lottery officials, the winner had no idea she hit the jackpot until a news alert mentioned that a winning ticket was sold at Martins. That prompted her to check her numbers using the lottery’s mobile app.

The player, who said she only buys tickets when she has a few extra dollars, used $4 in change from a grocery trip to purchase her lucky ticket. She later texted a family member to share the news, who described the message as containing an “unusual amount” of exclamation marks.

The woman, who visited Lottery headquarters on June 9, said she’s considering future investments and possibly purchasing a home. The retailer will receive a $1,000 bonus for selling the winning ticket.
