New Jersey’s Somerville. On September 27, a Somerset County jury found Gerald S. Chapman, 41, of Highland Park, New Jersey, guilty of a number of charges, including unauthorized firearm possession and endangering the welfare of a child. On November 15, after the trial, Judge Peter J. Tober sentenced Chapman to five years in New Jersey State Prison with a 42-month parole disqualifier.
The accusations stem from an incident of road rage that happened in Franklin Township on May 5, 2023. Chapman was charged with following victim John Doe’s car, hitting the car’s mirror, and then shooting Doe’s car twice with a 9 mm handgun. At the time, the victim was outside his car repairing the broken mirror.
Chapman’s daughters, ages one and a half and four, were reportedly in his car when the incident occurred. According to testimony, Chapman cleared his car of evidence and disposed of the gun after the event.
The Franklin Township Police’s investigative efforts were recognized by the prosecution team, which was headed by Assistant Prosecutors Michael McLaughlin and Lorina Murphy.
