Benington, NebraskaAfter a catastrophic truck accident in Bennington, Nebraska, scores of cattle were saved on a chaotic and freezing morning. In a remarkable attempt to contain the situation, emergency personnel raced to the scene of the crash, which left animals strewn across the road.

Just after 7:30 a.m. on Monday, deputies were dispatched to a two-vehicle collision at the intersection of Blair High Road and Bennington Road, according to the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office. They discovered the shocking result of a collision between a pickup truck and a cattle truck transporting 36 head of cattle, which caused the pickup truck to roll onto its side and dump its bovine cargo.

Emergency Crews Rally in Freezing Temperatures

Crews from several organizations put in countless hours to control the drama that was developing as temperatures dropped below zero. While some cattle were trapped inside the overturned truck, others were able to escape on their own and wandered along the side of the road.

The Nebraska Humane Society’s animal control officers promptly teamed up with the Irvington Volunteer Fire Department, Bennington Fire and Rescue, Nebraska State Patrol, and other organizations. They collaborated systematically to rescue the stranded animals and lead the stray ones to safety.

Rescue workers were able to move the livestock to a backup trailer in spite of the bitter weather. The Nebraska Humane Society posted pictures of the bizarre sight, showing cattle grazing close to the road while laborers worked to restrain them.

In a Facebook post that included the images, the Nebraska Humane Society said that Animal Control helped local law enforcement by containing the roving cattle until they could be put onto a truck.

Miraculously, No Injuries Reported

According to the sheriff’s office, both of the drivers involved in the collision survived the ordeal unharmed. To clear the area and restore order after the collision, multiple organizations had to work together, including Young’s Towing, Arrow Towing, and the Nebraska Department of Transportation.

All 36 cattle were safely herded and moved because of the responders’ perseverance and promptness.
