On Tuesday, the State of Texas handed President-elect Donald Trump over 1,000 acres of land to use for his mass deportation campaign.
In a letter to the president-elect, Republican Texas Land Commissioner Dawn Buckingham said the Trump administration will have about 1,400 acres of land in Starr County, Texas, to build deportation centers. The offer contrasted sharply with the increasing number of Democratic mayors and governors who have publicly stated their opposition to Trump’s immigration enforcement policies.
In a letter to the president-elect, Buckingham formally offered 1,402 acres of land in Starr County, Texas, for the construction of deportation camps. Approximately 35 miles west of McAllen, Texas, a 1,402-acre property is currently owned by the Texas General Land Office (GLO).
In order to enable the construction of a facility for the processing, detention, and coordination of the largest deportation of violent criminals in the history of the country, my office is ready to reach an agreement with the US Border Patrol, Immigration and Customs Enforcement, or the Department of Homeland Security, Buckingham added.
Then-candidate Trump had been explicit about his objectives for border and immigration enforcement prior to defeating Vice President Kamala Harris in an electoral landslide on election day.
Trump promised to halt birthright citizenship for children born to illegal immigrant parents in the United States, resurrect the Remain in Mexico program, recruit more Border Patrol agents, and resume building of the U.S.-Mexico border wall. Above all, he has pledged to start the biggest deportation campaign in American history.
By confirming claims that he plans to declare a national emergency and deploy military resources to assist in implementing his mass deportation program, the president-elect doubled down on this ambition Monday morning.
Nonetheless, an increasing number of Democratic leaders nationwide have stated that they oppose Trump’s proposals to repatriate illegal immigrants.
The governors of California, Arizona, Massachusetts, and Illinois have openly stated that they will not permit their law enforcement to assist with any future federal immigration enforcement initiatives. Similar remarks have been made by the mayor of Boston, and the Los Angeles government has effectively accelerated sanctuary city legislation in anticipation of Trump’s second term in office.
Texas is far more in favor of the president-elect’s plan, despite having to bear the brunt of the current border problem during the Biden-Harris administration.
Buckingham wrote to Trump, “I’m determined to use every tool at my disposal to achieve full operational security at the border.” If there are any questions you would like me to answer, do let me know.
