Barron County, WisconsinPokegama Lake in Chetek, Wisconsin, saw a chilly change on Christmas evening when two men dove into the icy waters after their UTV broke through the ice. The unsung heroes? They were brought to safety by a nearby family who were ice fishing a few yards away.
The Incident Unfolds on Pokegama Lake
On December 25, 2024, just before 7 p.m., two men on a UTV went through the ice close to the boat landing on Pokegama Lake.
After receiving a 911 call about the event, the Barron County Sheriff’s Department promptly sent deputies, the Chetek Fire Department, Chetek Police Department, and Chetek EMS to the location.
A Family s Quick Action Saves Lives
First responders discovered that a family who had been ice fishing nearby had already dragged the two males, ages 25 and 53, out of the cold water. They were able to transport the people to safety before the cops came, so their quick thinking probably saved the men’s lives.
After receiving treatment on the spot, the 25-year-old younger man was allowed to go. In worse shape, the 53-year-old driver was sent to Lakeview Medical Center for non-life-threatening injury treatment.
A Warning and Gratitude from Authorities
Officials are warning locals to use extra caution while going out on the ice as temperatures start to increase this week. Even on well-known bodies of water, the Barron County Sheriff’s Department urged citizens to thoroughly inspect the ice conditions before leaving.
As they do every day of the year, the department also conveyed its gratitude by saying, “A special thank you to the family that helped rescue these two individuals and all the responders who left their families on Christmas to help others.”
