TNA, MEMPHIS Early on Sunday, December 22, a man barged into a Walgreens in Memphis, Tennessee, brandishing his firearms, and demanded money in a startling heist. Armed with two weapons, the robber was captured on camera threatening staff members and stealing an undisclosed sum of money. This egregious incident is among the most recent to contribute to the mounting worries about safety in one of the most dangerous cities in America.
A Bold Robbery in the Early Hours
A man carrying two weapons, one in each hand, entered a Walgreens on Macon Road at around 1:30 a.m.
During the late-night shift, the suspect, wearing a ski mask and a short-sleeved shirt, approached staff members and demanded that they give over any cash that was on hand.
He hurried away from the scene of the theft. Video footage of the event was made public by Memphis Police, demonstrating the thief’s concerning actions throughout the crime.
Memphis Grapples with Ongoing Crime Wave
With 202 homicides in 2024—more than any other U.S. city—Memphis has gained a bad reputation for having high crime rates. With 226 homicides, Los Angeles had the second-highest number.
The city’s violence problems are not new; in 2023, Philadelphia set a national record of 329 homicides, while Memphis and Los Angeles were tied with 249 homicides apiece. Memphis struggles with safety rankings that are lower than many other cities around the nation, despite these concerning statistics.
City Safety Rankings Paint a Troubling Picture
Memphis received low marks in a number of safety-related categories in a recent WalletHub poll. With 182 U.S. cities included, the city came in last in the survey.
Memphis just outperformed Detroit in terms of financial safety, coming in second to last. At 180th place, slightly ahead of Baton Rouge and New Orleans, its community and home safety rankings were equally appalling. On the plus side, Memphis outperformed 81 other cities in that category when it came to the danger of natural disasters.
Despite efforts to reduce the problem, Memphis’ high crime rate persists, and officials and citizens anticipate greater citywide safety by 2025.
