MARATHON, FLThe U.S. Coast Guard quickly rescued four individuals on Sunday night after their boat started to sink off the Florida Keys. When the 27-foot boat began to take on water, the harrowing experience began about 11 miles north of Marathon. All four were saved before they could risk going into the water because of the boaters’ and Coast Guard’s prompt actions.

Coast Guard Responds to Urgent Call

Watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector Key West received a distress call at approximately 5 p.m. on Sunday, which triggered the emergency. The boaters said they needed help because their 27-foot boat was taking on water.

Because of the seriousness of the situation, Coast Guard Station Marathon sent a boat crew to the location to offer assistance right away.

Quick Rescue Saves Four Lives

When the Coast Guard team arrived, they safely loaded all four boaters onto the vessel. The people were quickly taken to the boat ramp on 33rd Street and no injuries were reported.

What may have been a far worse tragedy was probably avoided by their prompt and well-coordinated rescue.

Coast Guard Remains Prepared for Emergencies

The owner of the vessel is arranging for its salvage, according to confirmation from the Coast Guard.

According to Sector Key West watchstander Petty Officer 3rd Class Zachary Aparo, our teams constantly train to respond to these scenarios day and night.

Their timely call for assistance allowed us to arrive on the site and successfully perform a rescue before they went into the water.
