A spectacular rescue occurred Friday morning in Mystic, Connecticut, after a pickup vehicle plunged off a road and down an embankment, trapping the driver inside. After first responders hurried to free the driver from the wreckage, they were evacuated to a neighboring hospital with significant injuries.
Early Morning Crash in Mystic
On Friday, December 27, 2024, at around 8:23 a.m., a Toyota pickup truck rolled over an embankment on Yetter Road in Mystic.
After losing control of the truck, the driver—the sole person inside—became caught in the debris. Emergency personnel and police were sent to the scene right away.
Quick Response Saves the Driver
Several agencies sent emergency crews to the scene of the collision. The motorist was freed with the help of the Mystic Fire Department, Mystic River Ambulance, L&M Paramedics, and the Old Mystic Fire Department Heavy Rescue.
The driver was taken to Hartford Hospital by Life Star helicopter after being released from the truck, where they received treatment for severe injuries.
Ongoing Investigation
With assistance from the Southeastern Connecticut Regional Traffic Unit, the Groton Police Department is investigating the collision. The Groton, Stonington, Ledyard, and City of Groton Police Departments have accident reconstructionists on this team.
