San Antonio, Texas A former San Antonio police officer has returned to duty after being fired for allegedly serving a homeless man a sandwich made of dog poo. He was recruited in a small Texas town approximately 150 miles away from the scene of the first event.
Details of the Allegations and Dismissals
Matthew Luckhurst, a San Antonio Police Department officer at the time, was accused in 2016 of putting dog feces on a sandwich and leaving it next to a homeless man.
Luckhurst allegedly picked some excrement from the street, sandwiched them between two pieces of bread, and left them for the man, according to reports from a fellow officer.
Luckhurst said the sandwich was intended to be thrown away, not eaten, and denied any malice. The sandwich was not consumed by the homeless man.
A second incident involving a women’s restroom at the San Antonio Police Department later that year implicated Luckhurst. He was charged with smearing a fecal-like substance on a toilet seat. The specifics of the incident were not made public, but he did not deny participating.
Despite briefly returning to service after appealing his dismissal in 2019, Luckhurst’s termination was affirmed by a judge in 2020. His time with the San Antonio police was essentially terminated by this judgment.

Luckhurst was hired as a police officer at Floresville, a city around thirty miles from San Antonio, by February 2022. But after ten months, he was fired from the Floresville Police Department due to public outcry over his hire.
Luckhurst was employed in 2023 by the Benavides Police Department, which is about 150 miles from San Antonio.
Benavides Police Chief Andre Hines supported the choice despite his contentious past, pointing out that Luckhurst had a spotless record since joining the force and that no complaints had been filed. Hines added that prior to his employment, a comprehensive background investigation was carried out.
Renewed Controversy Surrounding the Hiring
Discussions around law enforcement accountability and whether or not police with a troubled past should be permitted to return to active service have been rekindled by Luckhurst’s employment. Despite the fact that his present employers are pleased with his work, his prior terminations have kept him under public attention.
