AURORA, COA A wheel fire on a busy highway was caused by a flat tire, and a semi-truck carrying wood chips in Colorado caught fire. Thick smoke billowed into the sky near Aurora, just east of Denver, as the scene sprang to life Monday morning.
Fire Breaks Out After Flat Tire Causes Wheel to Ignite
Aurora Fire Rescue responded to a fire on southbound E-470, close to 38th Avenue, about 10:30 a.m. on Monday.
When firefighters arrived, they discovered a semi-trailer that had been transporting wood chips completely burned. When the driver pulled over after seeing a flat tire, he saw that one of the truck’s wheels was on fire.
Firefighters Respond Quickly to Dangerous Blaze
Lack of access to fire hydrants and a restricted water supply was a significant obstacle for the initial units on the scene. Despite these challenges, the responding firefighters responded to the fire right away.
To help contain the fire, a total of 17 units from several organizations, including the Aurora Police Department, Colorado State Patrol, and Sable Altura Fire Rescue, arrived on the scene.
No Injuries Reported, Diesel Fuel Offloaded for Safety
The hazardous materials team from Aurora Fire Rescue intervened to remove about 50 gallons of diesel fuel from the truck’s tank after the fire was contained. To make sure that possible fuel dangers were not posing any more threats, offloading was essential.
E-470 staff then took over cleanup duties, working to clear the area after the fire was totally put out. Fortunately, there were no reported injuries during the incident.
