Miami, Florida After being linked to a fatal boat accident that claimed the life of an adolescent and left another permanently injured, a Florida real estate mogul has turned himself in to the police. Two years after the deadly event, which happened in Biscayne Bay close to Boca Chita Key in the Florida Keys, George Pino, 52, turned himself in to police.

Details of the Tragic Incident

Pino took 14 people on board a 29-foot Robalo boat on the evening of September 2022 to celebrate his daughter’s 18th birthday. Authorities claim that Pino hit a channel marker on his way back the dock while traveling at a speed of about fifty miles per hour. All of the passengers were thrown into the sea when the boat capsized due to the impact.

In addition to leaving 18-year-old Katerina Puig permanently incapacitated due to a catastrophic brain injury, the crash claimed the life of 17-year-old Lucy Fernandez. Authorities reported that a massive hole in the boat’s side was also torn by the impact. The charges against Pino have changed significantly as a result of witnesses and fresh evidence, notwithstanding his initial assertion that the incident was an accident brought on by the wake of a passing vessel.

New Evidence Leads to Felony Charge

Pino, who faces a criminal homicide charge, made his first court appearance on Thursday, two years after the crash. This came when bodycam evidence of Pino confessing to drinking two drinks while driving the boat was made public. Prosecutors decided to raise the charges from misdemeanors to criminal homicide in response to this admission, witness statements, and further research.

After additional witnesses came forward, Pino’s initial three misdemeanor charges were withdrawn in favor of the more serious criminal allegation. He appeared in Miami-Dade Court and entered a not guilty plea to the criminal homicide allegation. If found guilty, Pino may face a minimum penalty of 15 years and a maximum sentence of 30 years in jail.

The Impact of the Crash and Pino s Legal Battle

The victims and their families have been physically and emotionally scarred for a long time by the sad crash. While authorities did not administer a sobriety test at the scene, investigators later discovered 61 empty alcohol bottles, including one bottle of champagne, on the boat. This evidence has raised questions about Pino s level of impairment at the time of the crash, though Pino himself has denied being intoxicated.

At the scene, the boat was described as severely damaged, with the crash creating a large hole in the side of the vessel. Pino’s daughter was one of the eleven passengers hurt, along with the two teenagers. Pino s next court appearance is set for January, where he will face further legal proceedings in the case.

Honoring the Victims and Their Families

As the legal process unfolds, the focus remains on the young lives affected by this tragedy. The Fernandez and Puig families continue to cope with the deep loss and lifelong consequences of the crash. This case serves as a poignant reminder of the importance of safety and responsibility on the water.

In times of hardship, we can find solace in the words of Matthew 5:4:Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted.May the victims and their families find peace and healing in the days ahead.
