NY’s Indian LakeA moose that broke through the ice on Lake Abanakee was recently saved by a bold rescue effort by New York conservation officials and forest rangers. Without the use of a training handbook, a recently released video shows the tremendous effort and rapid thinking needed to free the stranded animal.

Moose Falls Through Ice on Lake Abanakee

Around 11 a.m. on January 16, a resident in the town of Indian Lake noticed the distressed moose and asked for assistance, starting the rescue effort. When New York Department of Environmental Conservation responders got there, they discovered the animal stranded around 100 yards from the coast, unable to move due to the thick ice.

In the footage posted on Tuesday, Forest Ranger Evan Nahor said, “It was good that we knew when the moose went in and we knew that time wasn’t on our side.” The tasks we needed to complete wouldn’t take an eternity.

Quick Thinking and Chainsaws to the Rescue

The crew swiftly came up with a daring idea after realizing how urgent the situation was.

Lt. Robert Higgins of the Environmental Conservation Police said, “We devised a strategy to say, hey, let’s see if we can start cutting the channel and see if we can get this moose out of there.”

There is no training handbook for removing moose from the ice, he said, making such rescues particularly difficult.

Using chainsaws, the rescuers cut a thin path through the ice to lead the moose to safety, as shown in the video.

Forest Ranger Matt Savarie stated, “We were all cooperating and we all understood our roles.”

We managed to clear that passage, remove the ice, and proceed with relative ease.

A Triumphant Escape

After clearing the slippery trail, Nahor and Savarie cautiously approached the moose while wearing cold-water rescue suits.

They pushed the animal along the channel with sleds. Even after spending around two hours in the icy water, the moose managed to muster the stamina to ascend to land.

The moose makes multiple tries to rise before eventually recovering its equilibrium in the dramatic footage. After getting to its feet, the moose quickly withdrew into the safety of the woods, leaving the rescuers feeling pleased and victorious and the moose in a positive mood.
