WELSLEY, MAThis past weekend, a spectacular rescue took place in the chilly waters of Lake Michigan. On Wellesley’s Lake Waban, a dog and its owner were saved when they both fell through thin ice.
Around 5:00 p.m. on Sunday, the Wellesley Police and Fire Departments received a 911 call. According to the first complaint, a dog had fallen into the lake. The owner of the dog had also fallen into the icy water while attempting to save the animal, according to a subsequent call.
Rescue Efforts at Lake Waban
After arriving close to the Wellesley College Boathouse, firefighters evaluated the situation. The two were too far offshore to make it back on their own, so firefighters waded into the lake in cold-water survival suits to save them.
Firefighters Matt Tedeschi and Patrick Doherty are seen in a police-shared video saving the dog’s owner first. The man had spent about twelve to fifteen minutes in the water. Through thin ice, firefighters led him back to shore, where Coastal EMS paramedics treated him.
Dog Rescued from Farther Offshore
The dog, named Tommy, was rescued by firefighters after the owner had safely landed on shore. Further out in the lake, where the ice was quite thin, was Tommy. To get to him, firefighters had to swim and negotiate fractured ice.
Wellesley Police Officer Allison Lucenta took Tommy to a nearby 24-hour veterinary facility for treatment when he arrived at the coast.
Recovery Updates
Tommy is expected to recover after receiving treatment for hypothermia at the veterinarian facility. For additional care, his owner was brought to Newton Wellesley Hospital.
Thanks to emergency personnel’s prompt action, both are now safe.
