BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC

– A North Carolina man’s emotional journey to find his lost pet python, Una, took an unexpected turn this week when he discovered she’d surfaced in an unlikely place—a Chili’s parking lot. For pet owner Christen Schiel, the reunion ended a distressing chapter of worry and longing.

Two Months of Heartbreak and Hope

Schiel’s beloved snake had disappeared two months ago, leaving him devastated. “I didn’t sleep because I was missing her and I went into depression and was crying hysterically,” he shared with WECT. “What a lot of people don’t know or realize is that losing a reptile is the same as losing a dog or a cat for another person.”

A Surprise Sighting at Chili’s

The unexpected discovery unfolded on Shallotte Crossing Parkway, where the Shallotte Police Department responded to a report of a large snake spotted near the restaurant. Officers posted photos of the python on their Facebook page, noting, “We believe this may have been someone’s pet and got loose.” They asked anyone with information to reach out to help identify the owner.

Schiel saw the post and quickly came forward, identifying the python as his own. “That beautiful snake is my baby girl, Una,” he told WECT. “She is the best snake anyone could ever have and I’ve been missing her deeply for the past two months.”

It turns out Una hadn’t been hanging around Chili’s for two months. According to Schiel, she had likely been hiding in his car, only to emerge by chance when he parked there recently. “She must have been hiding in my car and came out at the wrong time when I was at Chili’s around 2:30 p.m. yesterday,” he explained to the outlet.

Back Together and Healing

Their reunion took place at the Brunswick Animal Shelter in Supply, where Una was found dehydrated and had some minor injuries.

“She has rubs or burns on her which I’m gonna treat tonight with some iodine and Polysporin, and she was very dehydrated,” Schiel said. He even gave her a bath with electrolytes to help her recover from the ordeal. “She was just chugging water but other than that she’s a happy girl.”

With Una back home and in recovery, Schiel’s relief is clear. The two-month search may have been exhausting, but for Schiel, every moment of worry melted away with that moment in the parking lot.
