has left four elderly residents shaken and injured. Police have arrested Jeffery Scott Montana, 48, in connection with these attacks, charging him with burglary, kidnapping, and assault. The incidents, spanning three days, involved brutal assaults and threats, leading to Montana’s eventual capture.
A Three-Day Crime Spree Leaves Elderly Victims Traumatized
According to police reports, Montana’s alleged crime spree began on Nov. 4 at a residence on West Kent Road. An 80-year-old man answered the door to find Montana, who forced his way inside. The suspect knocked the man to the ground, demanded money, and allegedly pointed a gun at him while rummaging through the home.
The following day, Montana reportedly targeted an 85-year-old man and an 80-year-old woman at their home on Vermilion Road. After gaining entry by asking for a piece of paper, he struck the man with a hard object and forced both residents into the basement. There, they were assaulted while Montana continued to demand money.
On Nov. 6, a 70-year-old woman screamed for help after spotting Montana, dressed in black and wearing a ski mask, inside her home. She attempted to escape but fell down the stairs in her rush to flee. Her neighbors heard the commotion and called 911.
How Police Tracked Down the Suspect
Duluth police worked quickly to apprehend Montana following the attacks. Surveillance footage from a nearby smoke shop showed a man matching his description around the time of the first burglary. Investigators also traced Montana’s phone number through a transaction logged on the LEADS system in late October.
Police arrested Montana on Nov. 7 at the Duluth Transportation Center. At the time of his arrest, he was wearing clothing consistent with descriptions provided by the victims. A search of his home uncovered a black Beretta Air Pistol, which matched the weapon described by the first victim.
Next Steps in the Case
Montana is currently in custody with bail set at $300,000. He faces multiple felony charges, including three counts of burglary and two counts of kidnapping. His next court appearance is scheduled for Dec. 10 at 10:10 a.m.
The community of Duluth is relieved to see progress in the case, but the trauma endured by the victims underscores the importance of vigilance and community safety.
