BARRON COUNTY, WIA Two Minnesota youths have been arrested after they were discovered destroying mailboxes in western Wisconsin. The two lads, ages 17 and 15, were taken into custody in Barron County on charges of setting several mailboxes on fire and causing damage. An afternoon of vandalism quickly turned into a police chase and the finding of important evidence.

The Vandalism Spree in Barron County

Several reports of mailboxes being burned and destroyed in the northern region of Barron County were sent to local authorities on the afternoon of Thursday, December 26. Six distinct complaints were received, and dispatchers described the damage in multiple areas. In an effort to find the suspects, law officers promptly started patrolling the area.

Police conducted a traffic stop close to Shell Lake at approximately 4 p.m. after receiving a description of the car they thought was involved in the crime. Two teenage males from Minnesota who were connected to the crimes were quickly taken into custody as a result.

The Arrest and Discovery of Evidence

Officers found a number of pieces of evidence, including mail and packages that had been taken out of the damaged mailboxes, inside the suspect’s car during their investigation.

It was quickly determined that the lads were a 15-year-old from Cambridge, Minnesota, and a 17-year-old from Webster, Minnesota. The U.S. Postal Inspector’s office is currently working with the authorities and may file further mail theft allegations.

The 17-year-old is awaiting formal charges and is being charged with several arson-related offenses. Because of his involvement in the episodes, his younger companion, who is 15 years old, has been reported to Barron County Health and Human Services.

Ongoing Investigations and Possible Connections

As part of its ongoing investigation, the sheriff’s office is also looking into a number of other cases that are similar that have occurred in Barron County and the surrounding areas. The potential that the teenagers were involved in additional mailbox destruction is not being ruled out by authorities.

Both the local sheriff’s office and federal officials are investigating the incident in order to ascertain the extent of the harm the teenagers inflicted.
