ALBERT LEA, MN A couple from Albert Lea are facing significant criminal charges after their young child tested positive for incredibly high levels of cocaine and THC in a troubling case that has left a Minnesota community in shock. Outrage and incredulity have been aroused by the shocking discovery, as the parents are charged with not only consuming illicit substances but also carelessly putting their helpless child in danger.

Juvenile s Outcry Sparks Investigation

When a courageous young person came forward and confided in a Child Protection Worker back in August, the alarming scenario was first made public. The young individual revealed that Shelley Bush, 21, and Jonathan Lyons, 25, had allegedly used cocaine before abandoning a child under their care.

This startling charge started a series of events that would eventually reveal the child’s tragic exposure.

Damning Drug Test Results

Authorities wasted little time in setting up the collection of hair follicle samples from the threatened child later that same month. The findings presented an unquestionably bleak picture.

Significant quantities of cocaine and THC metabolites—the telltale indicators left behind as the human body processes these harmful substances—were found in the helpless child’s hair, coupled with a very high level of cocaine.

Police Take Swift Action

The Albert Lea police department acted quickly after receiving the concerning test findings in September. Both Lyons and Bush provided hair samples, which, predictably, were also found to be contaminated with cocaine and its byproducts.

Grave Charges and Court Proceedings

Lyons and Bush are now facing two serious charges: Endangering a Child by Permitting Their Presence During the Sale and/or Possession of a Controlled Substance and Neglect of a Child Likely to Cause Substantial Harm to Physical and/or Emotional Health. The defendants first appeared in court on Wednesday, November 27, and they are scheduled to return to Freeborn County Court on December 12.

The welfare of the innocent youngster continues to be the top priority as this tragic case develops. This horrific experience exposes the terrible effects of substance misuse on society’s most defenseless citizens. The society must deal with the terrible truth that a child was ruthlessly placed in danger by the very individuals tasked with their care while the legal system works.
