STERLING, VA
– In a high-stakes encounter early Sunday morning, U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers at Washington Dulles International Airport stopped a murder suspect trying to leave the country. Christofer Antonio Argueta Ramirez, a 19-year-old U.S. citizen, was detained by CBP officers at the departure gate as he prepared to board a one-way flight to El Salvador, set to depart at 1:30 a.m.
One-Way Ticket to El Salvador: CBP Steps In
CBP officials said that officers noticed the young man’s one-way ticket and conducted an identity check, which confirmed his status as a wanted fugitive. Argueta Ramirez was then placed into custody and later transferred to the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority Police.
According to the Prince William County Police Department, Argueta Ramirez is wanted in connection with the murder of Jose Abelino Guerrero, a Virginia resident who disappeared in December 2023 and whose remains were discovered a month later. Investigators believe Guerrero was killed during a drug deal that escalated into violence, involving multiple suspects.
The Violent Crime That Sparked a Nationwide Manhunt
The Prince William County Police Department reported two arrests made in January related to the homicide: Olvin Daniel Argueta Ramirez and a 17-year-old male. The investigation into Guerrero’s death remains ongoing, with authorities focused on bringing everyone involved to justice.
“Customs and Border Protection officers encounter all types of travelers arriving to and departing from the United States, including travelers wanted for allegedly committing seriously heinous offenses,” said Marc E. Calixte, CBP’s Area Port Director for the Area Port of Washington, D.C. “CBP continues to work with our law enforcement partners to help capture dangerous fugitives and to return them to face justice.”
CBP’s Role in Capturing Fugitives at U.S. Borders
CBP reported that on average, its officers arrest around 44 wanted individuals each day across airports, seaports, and land crossings. This statistic underscores the agency’s critical role in protecting U.S. borders and supporting domestic security.
With dedicated efforts like these, CBP continues to stand as a barrier to those attempting to evade justice, proving that for fugitives, the journey may end at the departure gate.
